Custom Shoes - Finished!

They are finally finished. This is the pair of shoes I've been working on for my mum for like a month now. I had one shoe left to finish and SMASH! Blocked. 'twas terrible.

But I got to finish them tonight. The pictures look atrocious because my camera sucks and they were taken at 2 am, but deal with me here, eh?

Prismacolor markers. Acrylics. Sharpies. Glitter Gel Pens. Cheap Shoes.

Progress on website!

So last night after posting the sketches and such I went ahead and found that piece of denim. Cutting it was a bitch because I couldn't find scissors for the life of me so I had to do it with a knife. But I managed. It was such an ordeal, putting modeling paste on it, mixing in the water, sprinkling a bit of tobacco here and there, adding some coffee to the mixture. And then I let it dry.

Today I actually sketched out the design on it, hopefully tomorrow I'll get to paint it and have it ALMOST ready.

Will have to fix certain coloration on photoshop. But otherwise it's looking good.

MUST remember I have to go shopping for art supplies. I need more sharpies, more pencil lead, more prismas, some ghesso and some modeling paste!

I'm thinking i might add some more coffee stains to this. Maybe? Possibly? Dunno yet, we'll see once I start colouring it.

Also, my uncle wants me to work some designs on this odd felt cowboy hat he has... well.... I'll see what I can do, haha. I'll take pictures later.

Oh! And my husband said I can show off some of the pipes he's carved lately, so I'll be doing that possibly tomorrow :)

One shoe down, one to go and a dozen or so pairs to start!

So doing shoes has resulted in quite a success. I really enjoy myself decorating and playing around. And people seem to like my designs. I've been getting a few requests but I've no idea what to charge. I'm running out of markers so I guess I should prolly include those in the price. I use prismacolors and copic markers. They seem to work the best on shoes. I'm also thinking on using some acrylics, like what I did with the soles in orange and yellow.

I'd really like some suggestions on prices. I mean, will people want nice looking expensive shoes like the mcbeth's? Or will they be alright with cheap ass shoes like the ones I made for my mom? The difference isn't that great, unless you're looking deeo into the details and fibers but....charging prices, right. Any ideas?

I was thinking of having people buy their own shoes and send them to me for decorating. Or ask them their shoe size and what type of shoe they'd like. According to those outlines, give them a price for the shoes and est. work time and material costs..... Anyone have suggestions?

P.s: Marisa, what shall we call our shoe business?

Work in Progress- Mums shoes

So after I finished my husband's McBeths my mother wanted a pair of her own. So she went out and bought these plain white canvas shoes. They're basic edition brand, so they're pretty cheap. They only cost her ten USD + tax.

I'm still working on them, I started just last night and worked till the sun came up. I've had them sitting by my bed for about a week now. It's always hard to start on a new project. That white canvas always feel so daunting. So I let them sit. I doodled on paper what I might do on the shoes. I was so afraid to do something wrong or something my mother wouldn't like. But eventually I picked them up and just went for it. So far, I'm liking the results.

So far I have learned that painting on cheap shoes is much harder than on expensive shoes. Seeing as expensive shoes have a tighter knit, it is much easier for the pen/marker to roll on them without having any in between white dots. But on cheap shoes the fabric is thick and woven loosely. Making it hard for ink to stick. It leaves a lot of blank dots in between.

On the up side, the ink bleeds a lot more on the cheaper shoes than on the expensive shoes, making color blending much easier.

MacBeth's- Playing with shoes.

My husband got these MacBeth's from his brother-in-law a few months ago. They were plain white canvas with black. A few nights ago while I was finishing up my mother's present, he started painting on the area around the tongues in orange with yellow. He did one and then stopped.

I had always wanted to paint of shoes. But I had never owned white canvas shoes. And was always afraid they wouldn't turn out great. Well, my husband gave me the courage. So after asking his permission and after his 'Go to town.' I grabbed all the markers I could find in the house, starting with sharpie outlines, and went crazy. Later on he got the idea to add the studs over the lace holes. I love that man. :)

I wish I had a before and after pictures. Oh well.
